MONTREAL, October 8, 2024 - The Société de développement commercial (SDC) District Central, in collaboration with its partners, is proud to announce the official unveiling of the Cocréer notre avenir mural, a signature District Central intervention. Located at 1401 Legendre Street West, this work of public art embodies the innovative and collaborative spirit of the District Central, while celebrating the richness of its artistic and economic ecosystem.

The mural revolves around a triptych concept, expressing the past, present and future of urban agriculture, one of the district's business hubs. Created by artists Amelia Hadouchi and Ankhone, this work illustrates not only the collaboration between its two creators, but also the collective spirit that drives the District Central business community. The mural acts as a mirror, reflecting the vitality of the interior through its exterior aesthetic. In an industrial district, the mural breathes a touch of color and dynamism that intrigues passers-by and illuminates the building.

Hélène Veilleux, Executive Director of the SDC District Central, comments: “This mural is part of a process of requalifying the area, from an industrial sector to a business district, highlighting the productive force as well as local and artistic know-how, and thus becoming an emblem on a Montreal scale. We're proud to be able to offer local entrepreneurs, workers and residents a mural that tells our collective story.

The mural, on the building's façade, also highlights the real estate sector's commitment to this territorial enhancement dynamic, with the active support and boldness of the host building's owner, AEDN, a key player in the evolution of the neighborhood.

Collaboration at the heart of artistic and economic innovation

The unveiling of this mural underlines the ability of District Central players to combine artistic innovation and sustainable economic development. It also testifies to the close collaboration between SDC District Central, AEDN, public partners such as the Government of Quebec and the City of Montreal, and committed local artists and entrepreneurs. Together, they illustrate the potential of co-creation and mutualization as engines of growth for the district. The work is funded by the Government of Quebec and the City of Montreal as part of the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal.

A strategic and symbolic location

The building housing this monumental work is home to La Centrale Agricole, the world's largest urban agriculture cooperative, highlighting its five years of innovation in the service of sustainability. This mural illustrates the importance of cooperation and the circular economy in the socio-economic development of the area through art, while highlighting the built environment and the urban agriculture behind the walls, two elements that characterize the district. It thus reinforces District Central's status as a prime destination for agrotourism in Montreal.

The building is visible from Boulevard de l'Acadie and Highway 15. The integration of public art into this industrial landscape reaffirms the determination of the SDC and its partners to make District Central a key artistic and cultural attraction.

Cocréer notre futur is more than just a mural; it's a symbol of cooperation, sustainability and innovation that will inspire future generations and reflect the collective identity of District Central.
