A look back at a colorful summer season in District Central
Summer 2024 in District Central was marked by a diversity of cultural, artistic and educational events that enlivened the neighborhood and its public spaces. From the heart of the District to the fields of La Prairie Louvain, the community enjoyed musical performances, inspiring workshops and circular economy initiatives. Here's a glimpse of this memorable summer season.
Swing ton Lunch: An essential tradition
Every Wednesday lunchtime this summer, Place Iona-Monahan was transformed into a lively stage thanks to Swing ton Lunch, a District classic. From June to September, this weekly event brightened up lunch breaks with a variety of performances ranging from jazz and blues to swing and Mediterranean rhythms. A total of 10 artists and groups shared their talents with District workers and residents, creating a convivial and festive atmosphere.
In addition to the musical performances, 15 local businesses had the opportunity to showcase their products and services. Names like Brama, Champignons Maison, Praline-toi, Olaola, Bois Urbain, Pattes et Griffes, Eki Mouvement, La boîte à bonbons, and many others, took advantage of this showcase to connect with the community. In all, 11 editions of Swing ton Lunch have enlivened our summer lunches, making this event a fixture of local life.
Escale: Bringing the neighborhood to life
To extend this festive atmosphere, District Central offered Escale, a series of musical events that enlivened three emblematic areas of District Central: Chabanel, Marché Central and Sauvé. In July, August and September, artistic performances enlivened these spaces, bringing residents and workers together around music and the arts, while highlighting the neighborhood's creative energy.
We were delighted to witness some unique festive moments, such as the performance of Mariachi Oro Blanco at the Silo microbrewery, during a 5 à 7 where a taco foodtruck contributed to a warm and friendly atmosphere. On a hot July day, the acrobatics of Saya Percussion fired up the crowd, encouraging everyone to dance and discover percussion movements. Last but not least, the Fanfare de l'île entertained us with its lively rhythms of trumpets and drums.
Cinéma sous les étoiles: When culture and agriculture come together
Esplanade Louvain hosted an open-air screening of the documentary La théorie du boxeur, a film about agriculture and farmers' coping strategies. With La Prairie Louvain as a backdrop, this event brought together film lovers and agriculture enthusiasts for a enriching evening under the stars.
La Prairie Louvain: A summer of workshops and discovery
The field at La Prairie Louvain was the scene of several themed workshops throughout the summer season. Here are the highlights of this series of events:
- A field viewed up close : An immersive discovery of the world of pollinators, giving participants a better understanding of their importance and vital role in our ecosystem.
- Plein air painting workshop : Accompanied by an enchanting musical performance by the violin-guitar duo Émilis, this workshop invited participants to paint La Prairie Louvain, giving free rein to their creativity.
- Discovering seeds : The Poliflora team guided participants in the creation of seed bombs, preparing them to embellish their gardens with the colors of La Prairie Louvain next year.
- The art of tinctorial plants : This workshop introduced participants to textile dyeing using local plants. Techniques such as shibori and tiedye were taught, and everyone left with a naturally dyed Furoshiki.
A summer rich in ideas and collaborations
Just as La Prairie Louvain welcomed a wide variety of pollinators this season, so too was District Central pollinated by cultural activities, local business collaborations and community initiatives. This summer strengthened the ties between residents, workers, businesses and creators that make District Central such a unique neighborhood.
