Neighborhood Spring Cleaning: When Cleanliness Meets Community

Cleanliness and quality of life are priorities that affect everyone in the District Central. With this in mind, the SDC District Central organized the Grand ménage du voisinage (Neighborhood Clean-up), an initiative carried out in collaboration with Rue Action Prévention Jeunesse (RAP Jeunesse), Ville en vert, and La Maison du Monde. Inspired by the weekly community clean-ups established by RAP Jeunesse alongside residents of La Station—the modular housing units located at 100 Louvain Street West—this project aimed to bring together entrepreneurs, workers, and residents around a common goal: caring for the neighborhood while fostering new connections.

Gathering at Esplanade Louvain as their starting point, about twenty participants combed sections of Chabanel, Parc, Meilleur, and Louvain streets to pick up litter in public spaces. In just two hours, nearly 96 kilos of waste were collected.

Beyond these tangible results, the activity sparked meaningful human interactions among people who rarely cross paths in their daily lives. Residents of the modular housing, who are currently on a social reintegration journey, were able to share a positive experience with local workers and organizations. This collective effort demonstrates that a cleaner neighborhood is built through everyone's involvement, and that even the simplest actions can strengthen solidarity, social cohesion, and a sense of belonging within the District Central.
