A New Sculptural Mural in District Central
A unique new mural with a sculptural component is well worth a visit in District Central. The artwork, titled Ligne de vie urbaine, was created by Montreal-based artist DALKHAFINE and comes to life at the corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Louvain Ouest Street. Part of District Central’s Signature Interventions Plan, this initiative—led by MURAL in collaboration with the Société de développement commercial (SDC) District Central—transforms the urban landscape while reflecting the neighbourhood’s values.
In addition to creating a large-scale mural, the SDC District Central wanted to showcase the innovative character of the area. Aluminum leaves were integrated into the piece to give it a 3D effect.
“This is the eighth mural to emerge in the district thanks to the efforts of the SDC District Central, with the goal of adding colour to an environment that can sometimes feel stark,” says Hélène Veilleux, Executive Director of the SDC District Central. “I applaud the boldness of the entire team behind this project for integrating such a distinctive sculptural touch.”
Full of curves and colours, Ligne de vie urbaine stands in striking contrast to its concrete surroundings and the district’s rectilinear buildings.
“The female figure at the centre creates a connection between nature, humanity, and ecology,” explains DALKHAFINE. “I love the idea of her holding the sunflower forward, almost as if she’s celebrating it. I also added a bee and a butterfly to the mural—two pollinating species that are essential to biodiversity.”
These elements are also central to the Signature Interventions Plan, which notably led to the creation of La Prairie Louvain in 2023, a field of 10,000 sunflowers where bees came to forage for nectar.
A Strategic Project in a Strategic Location
The mural was created in a strategic site that gives it excellent visibility. An average of more than 10,000 vehicles pass each day in front of the building at 9494 Saint-Laurent Boulevard. In addition, the artwork is visible to passengers on EXO trains along Line 15 Mascouche–Central Station.
The location of the artwork is key to achieving the goals of District Central’s Signature Interventions Plan, adopted to revitalize the area and create a more stimulating ecosystem for employers and workers. “The plan includes several areas of intervention—such as urban design, landscaping, and public art—which is a crucial tool for revitalizing the neighbourhood,” explains Marc-André Carignan, Lead for Signature Urban Design at District Central. “It helps showcase Montreal artists while bringing a bit of beauty, a bit of magic, to District Central.”
“Ligne de vie urbaine adds a new dimension to the neighbourhood’s public art corridor,” says Pierre-Alain Benoît, Executive Director of the MURAL Festival. “In the heart of a sector already overflowing with culture and creativity, this piece is sure to become a beloved landmark for everyone.”
This project, led by MURAL, received funding from the City of Montreal’s Mural Art Program (PAM). It was carried out in partnership with the SDC District Central, the property owner Groupe Dayan, and the Ahuntsic–Cartierville borough.
The project was also made possible thanks to the support of sponsors Bétonel-Dulux Chabanel and Atwill-Morin.
